Great tips for dog owners, when preparing for your upcoming move by: Dan Hopkins Moving can be one of the most stressful events in someone’s life, so why should that be any different for your dog? Here are 10 tips on how to prepare your dog for their upcoming move.10). Under no circumstances should you place your dog in the back of a moving truck. Even in a well-ventilated pet travel carrier it’s hot in the back of a moving truck with the door closed.9). Your dog will most likely want to play with the movers and everyone else, so instead take them to a kennel, dog spa or have a friend / relative watch them when the movers arrive. Those will be the best places for your best furry friend, then, you can devote your total attention to your move.8). If you must keep your dog with you during your move, please keep your loved one outside or out of the way of the movers. Dogs will crave the attention of strangers and can create obstacles for the movers.7). Have treats on hand on move day. Pamper your dog with treats to keep him / her quiet. It's a good way to get your dog to listen, and it's also not a bad idea to have human treats for your movers.6). Pack a separate box for your dog's favorite toys. Once you get to your new home, it will be crazy, and your dog may be scared. So, having his / her favorite toys ready will help relax them.5). Don't forget dogs will be excited on move day and they will need plenty of water. Your dog will have their tongue out all day, yelping, barking, crying and trying to lick all the new strangers that pass by. Exercise is the best way of getting your dog ready for move day. When they have worn off some of their nervous energy they will be more relaxed and calmer when the movers arrive. Be aware, depending on the age of your dog draining energy may not be easy, a 30 minute walk barely makes a dent in my dogs energy level. 4). Don't forget to make sure you let them out enough so that they can get their "mess" breaks in. Nothing will ruin your moving day more than a mess from your furry friend on your carpet. So take them out frequently and keep them on your property so they don’t make a bad first impression with your neighbors.3). If your dog will be present during the move, call your movers ahead of time and let them know. You’d be surprised how many men are afraid of dogs. Whether they are large or small dogs, it doesn't matter. Also, there could be movers that are allergic to dogs.2). After your move you will be busy unpacking, don't ignore your dog. Take time out regularly to take them for long walks to explore your new neighborhood together or take breaks from unpacking to play with them. A little together time will prove beneficial to your dog being well-behaved.1). Have fun – this is the time to celebrate. Have the movers take a picture of you and your dog moving into your new place. What a perfect reminder of the day you two just shared.(Dan Hopkins is Vice President, Development & Operations, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® CANADA).
